Voorhees College News November 20, 2018 Voorhees raises $100,000 during homecoming week After recently celebrating the 121st Homecoming, Voorhees College is pleased to announce raising $100,000 during Homecoming week. Some of the check presentations included the Voorhees College Golden Class of 1968, St. Paul's College National Alumni Association, and the Voorhees College National Alumni Association. This year's Homecoming theme was, "Voorhees: Begin. Believe. Become." The theme focused on students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members supporting Voorhees College mentally, physically, and socially. In addition to the Homecoming fundraising success, Tigers and the Lady Tigers Basketball teams celebrated a double victory. The Lady Tigers defeated the Middle Georgia State University Lady Knights 74-69 and Tigers defeated St. Thomas University Bobcats 89-79. During halftime of both games, the 2018 Mr. and Ms. VC Alumni, Gary Edwards and Tabitha Sparks were recognized. Additionally, the 2018 Hall of Fame inductees were recognized, Mary Burke, Hezikiah Dority, Russell Feaster, Ervin Henderson, Alexander Pope, Jr., John F. Potts, Sr., who was recognized posthumously and Raymond Singleton. Another highlight that took place during the weekend was the unveiling of the 2018 class of the National Alumni Association 10 Under 40 program. The Voorhees College 10 under 40 Young Alumni Recognition Program recognizes young alumni that are leading the way in various fields. The 2018 class members were Dr. Charlene Smith, Dr. Corey Sheffield, Dr. LaTonya Gillespie-Johnson, Major Brittanae Stanton, Derrick Smoot, Joseph Montgomery, Dannon Lindley, Gregory S. Ray, and Jamelle Burroughs (posthumously). On Sunday to culminate the Homecoming festivities, a Worship and Homecoming Closing event was held in Massachusetts's Hall featuring Voorhees alumnus Rev. T.A. Belton, a 1984 graduate. More than $2,200 was raised from this event in support of the Voorhees College Choir. President W. Franklin Evans said Homecoming 2018 overall was a success. "Homecoming is about welcoming home our esteemed alumni to celebrate Voorhees existence with current students and friends. We are pleased with how many came out to continue the tradition and appreciate all the love and support, " Evans said.
