Tuskegee University adds new honor society

Students interested in new engagement opportunities will now have even more options with the addition of a new chapter of a national honor society. The Tuskegee University History Department's petition to have a campus chapter of Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society has been accepted. The university's chapter will be known as Alpha Pi Delta. Starting this fall, students and faculty will have the opportunity to join.

According to its website, "Phi Alpha Theta is an American honor society for undergraduate and graduate students and professors of history. The society has over 350,000 members, with about 9,500 new members joining each year through 860 local chapters." The organization was founded in 1921 at the University of Arkansas.

"The establishment of Phi Alpha Theta at Tuskegee University connects TU students to a national organization that supports our mission of research, scholarship and student development," said Dr. Sheena Harris, the chapter's advisor and coordinator of the university's Honor's Program area of the newly launched Student Engagement Initiatives.

Harris said that Phi Alpha Theta connects students to the national higher education landscape, helps them engage in serviceable research and scholarship, and will help create competent, credentialed and comprehensively developed students.

Membership requirements are as follows:

  • Undergraduate students must have completed at least 12 semester hours in history (4 courses) with a GPA of at least 3.1 in history and a 3.0 or better overall.

  • Graduate students must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours towards their master's degree and have a GPA of 3.5 or better.

  • Faculty members above the rank of instructor who teach history qualify automatically, pay the same fees, and receive the same privileges as student members

  • Membership is not limited to history majors.
