Clark Atlanta University News October 6, 2016 Clark Atlanta University Awarded Nearly $700,000 Clark Atlanta University (CAU), ranked in the Top 20 Best HBCU's by U.S. News & World Report, is the recipient of another grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This latest award totals $693,854 and will be used to purchase a state-of-the-art piece of research equipment called a secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS). The SIMS is very significant because it is used to determine the atomic and molecular level makeup of any material. This newest device is in addition to existing research equipment at CAU worth more than $1.5 million. The SIMS will be shared by the chemistry and physics departments at CAU for interdisciplinary study of materials science. Data gained from research conducted by co-principal investigators Ishrat Khan, Ph.D. and Michael Williams, Ph.D., using the SIMS will help develop medicine which can be employed to cure diseases at the molecular level and create green energy technology; including batteries for electric vehicles, drones and electric helicopters. This groundbreaking equipment will allow 22 CAU graduate students the opportunity to gain hands on research laboratory experience. "This instrument allows us to become one of the premier institutions of materials research in the Southeast, and will enable us to serve more students at all levels in materials science," said Dr. Khan, a full professor of chemistry. "This instrument will also bolster CAU's goal of 'lifting every voice' by increasing the number of black Ph.D.'s in materials science," he explained. The SIMS will be housed in the Thomas W. Cole Research Center for Science and Technology at CAU. Collaborators on projects using the SIMS include Morehouse College, Spelman College and Georgia State University.
