Southeast alums raise more than $100,000 for Tuskegee University

The South Eastern Region of the Tuskegee National Alumni Association celebrated the university in grand style Saturday. During their 2015 TNAA South Eastern Region Conference in Birmingham, $100,255 in donations for the university was raised during the weekend. The gift will be used will be utilized for key university initiatives, including student engagement and the General Fund.

During the President's Luncheon, a key to the city was given to Tuskegee University president, Dr. Brian L. Johnson. Walter Wortham, Tuskegee University National Alumni Association president, presented the key to Johnson on behalf of Mayor William A. Bell.

"We are deeply grateful to all of our South Eastern Region alumni for their hospitality and for their monumental support and spirit of camaraderie for Tuskegee and its key initiatives," said Robert Blakely, vice president for Development and Advancement. "We are especially grateful for their support of our General Fund."

Held by the Birmingham Area Alumni Association at the Doubletree Hotel, the conference is one of five regional alum conferences. The South Eastern conference was an opportunity to discuss alumni and university affairs and featured several business sessions and presentations from university representatives. The event, which had about 100 registrants, was also for alumni to come together to reaffirm their commitment to serve the university and meet with Johnson and first lady Shemeka Barnes Johnson.

The first organized off-campus Tuskegee University alumni club was established in 1905 in Montgomery, Ala. Today, the South Eastern Region consists of about 23 clubs in seven states including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
