Hampton University News October 3, 2013 HU Nursing Program receives $1.3 million grant The Hampton University School of Nursing (SON) was awarded at $1.3 million grant by the Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration. The funding will be dispersed over a four-year period, and was given to only nine schools. HU was the only Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to be awarded. The project is entitled the Veterans Education Transition for Success (HU-Vets), and seeks to increase veterans' enrollment and graduation from HU's School of Nursing baccalaureate curriculum, with counseling, mentoring, curriculum adaptation, test preparations and appropriate recognition of related military education and experiences. The effort's principal investigator was HU Assistant Professor of Nursing Dr. Sherri Saunders-Goldson, herself an Air-Force veteran. Goldson worked with Dr. Hilda Williamson, the SON Assistant Dean, and Dr. Bertha Davis, both retired Army Reservist, on the HU-Vets project. "The HU School of Nursing is both honored and excited about this award," Goldson said. "As veterans ourselves, we are happy to support other veterans and help qualify and educate them to go into the nursing field." The HU SON offers degree programs in nursing on the undergraduate, graduate and PhD levels. Undergraduate programs include the B.S., LPN to B.S. and RN to BS.
