Morehouse College News August 2013 Campbell Appointed Provost and Senior Vice President By Add Seymour, Jr. Garikai Campbell, an expert in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, has been appointed Morehouse's new provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs by President John Silvanus Wilson Jr. '79. Campbell comes from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where he served in several leadership positions, including, most recently, as associate vice president for Strategic Planning and Special Assistant to the President. His first day at Morehouse will be Aug. 5. "Morehouse is one of the most historically significant institutions of higher learning in our nation, and one whose mission of preparing, developing and mentoring its men to lead lives of leadership and service is more important today than ever," Campbell said. "I am looking forward to working with the president, faculty, staff, students, board and alumni to build on the strengths of the institution and support the rigor of the academic program." Campbell received his undergraduate degree in mathematics from Swarthmore in 1990 and a Ph.D., also in mathematics, from Rutgers University in 1999. He is applauded for his innovative perspectives in higher education, particularly for his work in shaping programs designed to engage and retain students in the STEM disciplines. Among his many awards are the Minority Graduate Fellowship by the National Science Foundation; the Lindback Minority Junior Faculty Grant; the Woodrow Wilson Career Enhancement Fellowship; and the Henry Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching from the Mathematical Association of America. Campbell comes to Morehouse during a time of transition for the College to work with President Wilson, who is focused on building both character and capital preeminence at the school. "I immediately recognized in Dr. Campbell a combination of energy and intelligence that makes him the ideal person to lead Morehouse's academic program and I could not be more excited to welcome him to the College," said Wilson. "We need significant game-change potential in each and every new teammate we bring aboard. Kai will clearly be a game-change provost, who will play an important role in helping to achieve our goal of strengthening Morehouse as one of the nation's leading liberal arts colleges.
