Harris-Stowe State University Named One of the Nation’s Top Institutions for Awarding Math and Education Degrees to African American Students

Harris-Stowe State University (HSSU) was named one of the nation’s top 100 institutions for awarding degrees to African American students in education and mathematics and statistics by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, a national diversity publication.

Harris-Stowe was ranked No. 40 in education and No. 47 in mathematics and statistics in the “Top 100 Degree Producers: Baccalaureate” among institutions of higher learning. Harris-Stowe also is the only institution in Missouri that made the Top 50 for degrees awarded to African-Americans in mathematics and statistics, as well as in education. The rankings are based on data from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics.

“The national ranking our institution has achieved is incredible considering that HSSU was just approved to offer a math degree less than five years ago,” said Dr. Dwaun J. Warmack, President of Harris-Stowe State University. “This recognition, as well as our top 40 ranking in education, is just one more reason for students and their parents to give Harris-Stowe a look because we are becoming a premier regional university.”

“We are very pleased HSSU is being recognized for the success we’ve had in supporting African-American students in earning degrees in these vitally important disciplines,” said Dr. Odesa Weatherford-Jacobs, Interim Dean of the College of Education.

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education helps build educational, cultural, social and economic structures and has ranked institutions conferring the most degrees to minority students for the past 30 years.

“This national recognition in these degree areas serves as a testament to the outstanding work of our faculty and students,” said Dr. Dwyane Smith, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Harris-Stowe State University, located in midtown St. Louis, is a fully accredited four-year institution that offers 16 degree programs in the areas of teacher education, business and arts & sciences. In 2013, HSSU ranked No. 1 in the state in degree production of African-Americans in mathematics and ranked 4th of 13 public institutions in the degree production of African-Americans (Missouri Department of Higher Education). The university, which has been in existence for more than 150 years, offers the most affordable bachelor’s degree in the state of Missouri.
