Bethune-Cookman University News November 2016 B-CU Welcomes Its First 'Yes We Must' Coalition Student Ambassador Student Exchange Program Offers Opportunity for Partnering Colleges to Experience B-CU B-CU has welcomed exchange student, Ananya Kadir, to the Wildcat family for the 2016 fall semester. Ananya comes to B-CU from the College of Saint Elizabeth (CSE) located in Morristown, New Jersey. Kadir was selected by her home school and the 'Yes We Must' Coalition (YWMC), where students are given the opportunity to gain exposure to new academic and personal experiences through semester exchanges. Kadir, who is a native of Bangladesh, came to the United States to obtain her undergraduate degree. "Ananya is an outstanding student. She is a member of our honors program," said Dr. Anthony Santamaria, Dean of Arts and Science at the College of Saint Elizabeth. "From an academic standpoint, Ananya wanted some exposure to computer engineering content, as well as an opportunity to broaden the scope of her college experience," he explained. B-CU represented an ideal student exchange opportunity for Ananya. "I'm a huge proponent of travel, so I wanted to take the opportunity to study in different places while I obtained my undergraduate degree," she said. "Ananya is also very service-driven and is focused on building leadership and character in both herself and others," said Dr. Santamaria. "Like CSE, B-CU's mission and values align perfectly with such goals and principles," he shared. The 'Yes We Must' Coalition Student Exchange Program has been a collaborative effort for the last three years. "B-CU played a central role in the design and development of the program. CSE and B-CU are among seven (7) 'Yes We Must' Coalition members currently participating in the program, with up to 35 schools eligible to participate," Dr. Santamaria concluded. Ananya is the first 'Yes We Must' Coalition student at B-CU. Out of the schools that partner with the YWMC initiative, Kadir chose B-CU. "I was excited to attend B-CU because it offered similar classes that I was looking for and the mission of the university was very similar to my own at CSE; I was also impressed that Dr. Bethune, a woman, founded the university." Kadir's expected graduation date is set for May 2017. Currently at B-CU, Ananya serves as a research student with Dr. Isokpehir in the College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics; and is an executive board member for the International Studies Club. Her plan after the exchange program is to invite two Wildcats to her home university (CSE) to experience other cultures and attending another university. SANDRA M.
