JCSU student to share stage with Nobel Peace Prize winner
JCSU student Mpumi Nobiva will participate in a conversation with Nobel Peace Prize winner from Liberia Leymah Gbowee on March 21 at Queen's University.
Gbowee lead a woman's peace movement that helped end a civil war in Liberia in 2003 and helped the country to hold free elections. She was presented with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 along with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Tawakkul Karmen "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights to full participation in peace-building work."
Gbowee is visiting the Queen City to praise the success of No Backpack Day, an effort created by Blythe Elementary School Huntersville student Mongai Fankam to raise support and awareness for the children of Cameroon who lack backpacks and carry their books to school in plastic bags. Nearly 30 schools now participate in the event and more than 5,000 backpacks filled with supplies have been sent to Cameroon, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
The event will also feature JCSU student Mpumi Nobiva, a motivational speaker and graduate of the inaugural class of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, South Africa.
It will take place at Dana Auditorium - 1900 Selwyn Avenue Charlotte, NC 28274 at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2015. Doors open at 10:30 a.m.
