Vice President Biden recognizes VSU Students for Domestic Violence Awareness Campaign
Two Virginia State University students will join Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010 at a reception honoring the16th Anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act.
Nichelle Broner and Jordan Watson were nominated for this honor after their successful involvement in the implementation of The Red Flag Campaign at VSU. The Red Flag Campaign is an innovative program for college students that raises awareness about dating violence and encourages students to “say something” when they see a red flag.
Broner is being recognized for her role in coordinating an Open Mic Night at VSU that focused on dating violence awareness through a partnership between VSU’s Mass Communications Club and University Counseling Center. Watson is being recognized for a “Poetry Lounge” segment he conducted on the University’s radio station, WVST, where students called into the station and read their poems about dating and relationships.
The Violence Against Women Act was drafted in 1994 by then-U.S. Senator Joe Biden’s office with support from several women’s advocacy organizations. The legislation was described as "the greatest breakthrough in civil rights for women in nearly two decades.”
