Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden to Speak at Bowie State Commencement

Dr. Carla Hayden, the first woman and first African American to lead the Library of Congress, will address about 325 graduates and their families at the Bowie State University commencement on Friday, December 16 in the Leonidas S. James Physical Education Complex.

Dr. Hayden was sworn in as the 14th Librarian of Congress on September 14, 2016 after being nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. She had previously served as the CEO of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore since 1993. In 2010, she was nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate to be a member of the National Museum and Library Services Board.

Before joining the Pratt Library, Dr. Hayden was deputy commissioner and chief librarian of the Chicago Public Library. Earlier, she was an assistant professor for library and information science at the University of Pittsburgh and library services coordinator for the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. She began her career with the Chicago Public Library, first as the young adult services coordinator and later as a library associate and children's librarian.

Dr. Hayden was president of the American Library Association. In 1995, she made history when she became the first African American to receive Library Journal's Librarian of the Year Award in recognition of her outreach services at the Pratt Library. Those services included an after-school center for Baltimore teens offering homework assistance, as well as college and career counseling.
