Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well.  Today I'm celebrating the 1889 birth of Claude A. Barnett. In 1919 Barnett created the Associated Negro Press (ANP) news service. By 1935, the ANP is serving over 200 subscribers across the country and after WW II its membership has grown to include more than 100 African American newspapers. During World War II, Barnett and other Black journalists pressured the U. S. government to accredit Black journalists as war correspondents. Barnett also served as a member of the Tuskegee Institute Board of Trustees until 1965.
TWO FREE LIVE ON-LINE WEBINARS

Wednesday, September 25, 2:00 - 3:00 ET
Class Title: Creating a Positive Working Atmosphere for Your Library:  Motivating Actions To Help Library Employees Feel Value
Instructor: LaVerne McLaughlin, Director, James Pendergrast Memorial Library, Albany State University (GA)

We know how important drive is for success, but "being driven" is something different. Every individual has different needs.  What inspires, drives or motivates a person to do something might be quite different from what drives another person.  Needs change over time.  Wants differ individually and maturity levels or emotional intelligence of people vary.

It is difficult to understand what motivates people without assessing what people need and want from their work.  Equally, we as librarians must adjust our tactics for reaching a new generation of librarians, and act as inclusive leaders.  In order to have a positive academic environment, employees must be team oriented, be accountable,  be respectful of others, feel a sense of job security, and build trust in the workplace.

LaVerne McLaughlin is tenured associate professor and Director of the James Pendergrast Memorial Library at Albany State University (GA).  LaVerne is a past HBCU Board Member and believes that the HBCU Library Alliance has afforded an abundance of knowledge and growth in librarianship for those who have been selected to participate in the activities.  Through the Alliance, the network of librarians has provided mentoring experiences that have grown into dear colleagues, and a vast store house of knowledge to be shared by each librarian involved. She considers herself fortunate to be a part of the HBCU Library Alliance Leadership Institute, Archives Institutes, and HBCU Mentoring Programs that have provided her with sound and diverse training to network and share knowledge with her fellow librarians.
