Head of Reference and Information Literacy Programs - The head of the reference division reports directly to the library dean. This position is a senior position in the Miller F. Whittaker Library. Provides leadership and management for reference, information and research services in all formats and delivery methods; supervises professional and classified reference staff; leads, mentors and collaborates with librarians at the Miller F. Whittaker Library to provide reference services and to integrate information literacy and library instruction into library services. Responsible for the organization, implementation, coordination, expansion, and promotion of the information literacy and library instruction programs with an emphasis on undergraduate instruction and integration into the General Education curriculum. The position educates campus faculty, staff, and administration about information literacy and collaborates with other faculty to design appropriate information literacy curricula, competencies and delivery methods. Assigns library liaisons and serves as a liaison to assigned academic disciplines and departments including collection development. Staffs the information commons and information desk on a regular schedule and regularly teaches individual classes and the one credit LS150. Coordinates and conducts staff training on new research and instructional technologies and general databases. Administrative Duties: Supervises library instruction, reference collection management, government information, and shelving; Leads, plans, develops, assesses, and manages reference, information and research services in all formats and modes of delivery including online; Maintains awareness of trends and technologies that affect reference services and develops and revises services to reflect these trends; Serves as a member of the Dean of Library senior staff and participates in the overall planning and goals of the university library; Develops and approves all web based library research and course guides, annotated bibliographies, and related library publications in assigned subject areas; Manages the Collection Development process; Conducts annual performance reviews of all personnel assigned to reference; Schedules the reference desk so that someone is available to assist users all the hours the library is open including nights and weekends; Compiles monthly and annual statistical reports and quarterly reports of activities; Trains all new reference librarians staff and student workers assigned to reference; Meets regularly with all persons supervised by the head of reference; Plans, develops, and evaluates programs to improve reference services; Answers all correspondence and surveys on reference service and delegates correspondence and surveys to the appropriate individuals within the department; Mentors those individuals assigned; Maintains and develops the reference collection in coordination with the reference collection manager. Conducts workshops on reference materials for other members of the library faculty and staff. Prepares instructional materials for classes. Prepares user guides and other instructional materials for classes. Works with teaching faculty on library instruction.
Qualifications
A graduate degree in library and information science from an ALA accredited program. A minimum of five years relevant and progressively responsible administrative experience as a professional librarian in managing an academic library, broad understanding of a variety of academic disciplines, work actively and closely with library colleagues and faculty to assess user needs, knowledge and understanding of trends and issues related to libraries, information services, and users, demonstrated planning, organizational and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to foster a collegial work environment and to coordinate the work of others. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. A team oriented individual with a collegial leadership style, strong administrative abilities, and the ability to coordinate and work with students, faculty, staff, and the community in forging partnerships. Experience with public service applications of computer technologies, the Internet, and campus-wide information systems are essential.
Reference and Information Specialist - Responsible for collection utilization, development, and interpretation with emphasis on ongoing analysis, assessment, evaluation, and policies and procedures for the reference, circulating and microform collections. Supervises the development of the reference collection and check holdings against standard bibliographies. Work with the reference and information specialists and faculty to locate and recommend titles of purchase. Provide reference, instruction, bibliographic services, and advanced research and training services to the academic community and other users. Serve as liaison between library and departmental faculty. Compile bibliographic resources and participate in library and campus-wide committees, policies, procedures, and setting goals.
Experience with using and infusing electronic resources in an educational environment. Strong oral, written, presentation, interpersonal, and technical skills. A background in discovery tools, library outreach services, information technology, and library networking. The ability to assess needs and work well with the university community, colleagues, and other users. Involves evening and weekend working hours.
Qualifications
ALA accredited MLS/MSLS. Strong professional background in collection development, information retrieval, information literacy, and reference services. Knowledge and understanding of issues and trends in reference services. Demonstrated leadership qualities. Candidates should be motivated, flexible, a team player, and comfortable with change.
