Coahoma Community College News April 25, 2019 Coahoma SkillsUSA Members Claim Top Awards The Coahoma Community Chapter of SkillsUSA recently competed at the SkillsUSA Mississippi State competitions that were held at the Trade Mart Center and Clyde Muse Center in Jackson, MS. CCC saw much success at the events and placed in the following categories: * Brandon Giles & Aldrict Hill - 1st place Brick Masonry * Dontarius Jackson - 2nd place Culinary Arts * Tre'Sha Banks - 2nd place Commercial Baking * Devi'Yonna Young - 3rd Restaurant Service Ann Shelton-Clarke, dean of the Division of Career and Technical, offered her congratulations to the students and well-wishes for the future. "I am delighted to hear the news of our student's special placings in their respective programs areas," said Shelton-Clark. I hope this will be the beginning of many accomplishments for our students." SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel. We provide educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education (CTE) in the nation's classrooms. "It is indeed an honor well-deserved and I have no doubt that this is the beginning of greater things to come," Shelton-Clark added. The team is headed to Louisville, KY on June 24-28 for the 2019 National Leadership and Skills Conference. All first-place winners at the state competition will advance to the nationals. CCC students, Brandon Giles & Aldrict Hill, will compete with other students in Brick Masonry from the other 49 states. More than 6,000 outstanding career and technical education students - all state contest winners - will compete hands-on in 100 different trade, technical and leadership fields. Students will work against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in occupations such electronics, computer-aided drafting, precision machining, medical assisting and culinary arts. Contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations and labor organizations, and test competencies are set by industry. Leadership contestants will demonstrate skills including extemporaneous speaking and conducting meetings by parliamentary procedure. The competitions are open to the public and free of charge.
