Inspirational conference for young women celebrates its seventh year
At Fort Valley State University, First Lady Betty Rivers' Sip-n-Chat has become a staple. For nearly a decade, the campus' young women mark their calendars for this not-to-miss, motivational event, to learn the latest academic, professional and image tips that will help them get an edge on campus and in the job world.
This month, the biannual power workshop commemorates its seventh year during "Sip-n-Chat: A Celebration" at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 in the C. W. Pettigrew Center.
"This year, we are taking a look down memory lane," said Rivers. "This program is a glimpse back and a look forward. We're doing a retrospective of past and present Sip-n-Chats, and a look at the program's future."
The night's featured keynote speaker will be Dr. Berlethia Pitts, interim chair of the Department of English and Foreign Languages. During an address, called "Blowing Your Top Off," Pitts will speak about projecting a positive self image, how to deal with negative people and communicating with confidence.
The program will also feature FVSU's best-spoken word artists during the 1895 Poets' Studio. Afterward, models will take to the runway to showcase the latest fashions and accessories from Belk Department Stores.
