Dr. William R. Harvey, a Talladega College graduate, class of 1961, has had an illustrious career as a higher education administrator. He has been described as "one of the most focused individuals that one can meet." There are not many people who have demonstrated the dedication to education and service that Dr. Harvey has throughout his distinguished career.

Harvey is Talladega College's most generous living donor, with contributions totaling more than seven figures. He adds to this legacy of giving with his most recent gift of $100,000. Fifty thousand of that dollar amount will be used to endow the museum named in his honor. The remaining $50,000 will be used to establish the Oscar L. Prater Scholarship for students majoring in mathematics. Harvey has often said, "Talladega taught me more than two plus two equals four." And when asked about his generosity, he shared, "don't appreciate Bill Harvey, appreciate Talladega College."

As a student at Talladega, Harvey majored in history and participated in civil rights demonstrations. He played basketball all four years. He had two jobs: working at the snack bar in The Inn at Callahan and washing glasses by hand in the cafeteria. He took a class with David Driskell and learned about African American art and artists. He stood in awe of the Hale Woodruff murals every time he walked into Savery Library. "I had outstanding learning experiences while I was at Talladega," said Harvey. "And that's why I give."

A native of Brewton, Alabama, he is a graduate of Southern Normal High School and is among a list of twenty Talladega graduates who have served, with distinction, as college and university presidents. This list also includes his classmate, long-time friend, fraternity brother (Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.), basketball teammate, and colleague, the late Dr. Oscar L. Prater.

After graduating from Talladega, Harvey served three years on active duty in the United States Army with tours of duty in the United States and Europe; and is currently a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve. Harvey went on to earn a master's degree from Virginia State University and a doctorate in college administration from Harvard University.

Before becoming president of Hampton, Harvey worked in various leadership roles at Harvard University, Fisk University, and Tuskegee University. He has also served on several boards and councils, including the President's Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the President's National Advisory Council on Elementary and Secondary Education, the Commission on Presidential Scholars, and the U. S. Department of Commerce Minority Development Advisory Board. Additionally, he is a successful businessman who owns one hundred percent of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Houghton, Michigan.

In June 2022, he retired as the president of Hampton University after serving in that position for forty-four years, the longest tenure of any college or university president in the country. While there, Harvey created a monumental legacy. He elevated the school's profile by increasing enrollment, raised the endowment, improved the quality of campus facilities, and implemented several innovative programs which led to increased opportunities for Hampton graduates. In his own words, when reflecting on the impact of his decision-making, Dr. Harvey shared, "I don't do things for personal gain. I do because it is the right thing to do."

"We are grateful for Alumnus Harvey's longstanding relationship with Talladega College. We appreciate his continued love for and investment in his alma mater and its students," said President Gregory J. Vincent. "There are many exciting things on the horizon for Talladega College as we continue to grow and serve our students and the Talladega Community. The support for our mission, especially from a stalwart educator like Dr. Harvey, is a valued endorsement. We look forward to cultivating and stewarding additional resources that will make a difference in our students' abilities to complete their degree."
