Norfolk State University News December 13, 2013 NSU will Host Statewide Robotics Competition Norfolk State University will host more than 500 high school students who are expected to participate in a statewide robotics competition next month at Joseph G. Echols Hall. The quarterfinals for the First Tech Challenge, a competition where teens build, program and design robots to complete assigned tasks, will be held Jan. 25 at the University. The international program has more than 300,000 participants and is a way to introduce young people to the science, technology and engineering fields. Patricia Mead, a professor of engineering in the NSU School of Science, Engineering and Technology, said nearly 50 teams have registered for the all-day event. Mead serves as tournament director for the competition held at NSU. "This program helps teach young people about science, engineering and technical opportunities," Mead said. "When we have our event at Echols, it is going to be a like March Madness except it's a robotics tournament." Mead said the University is in need of student volunteers to help with the event.
