WASHINGTON (August 4, 2010) - Members from Howard University's College of Arts and Sciences are traveling abroad from Aug. 2 - 17 for the 2010 Summer Study Abroad in Kemet.

The team of a dozen faculty, staff and students, led by Greg Carr, Ph.D., JD, associate professor of Africana Studies, chair, Department of Afro-American Studies, were joined by members from Chicago State University and Miles College, Ala., making the journey a collective effort of 60 people.

During the trip to Kemet, (The name that the ancient inhabitants called the land we now know as Egypt) students will be working on research projects and developing a documentary that will chronicle the three year story of this study abroad. The research students engage in while in Kemet and after returning to Howard highlights the intersections of their overall experiences abroad, the knowledge they gain from each site visit, the thematic considerations and writing prompts that guide the lectures, and their varied academic disciplines and interests.

The 2010 Summer Study Abroad in Kemet tour is the College of Arts and Sciences' third annual research tour of the Nile Valley. It introduces students to the general history of Africans in the Nile Valley during the classical era [10,000 b.c.e.-330 c.e.], with particular emphasis on the three millennia period encompassing what is colloquially referred to as "Ancient Egyptian" history.
