SU's Dr. Sandra Brown named "Fellow" by National League for Nursing
Dr. Sandra Chaisson Brown, a professor in Southern University's School of Nursing, was recently awarded "Fellow" status by the National League for Nursing's Academy of Nursing Education. She joins the academy's elite group of fellows representing nursing schools and programs across the United States.
The award is based on Dr. Brown's innovative teaching and learning strategies; nursing education research; faculty development; academic leadership; promotion of public policy that advances nursing education; collaborative educational, practice and community partnerships.
The Academy of Nursing Education was founded by the NLN in 2007 to foster excellence in nursing education by recognizing and capitalizing on the wisdom of nurse educators who have made sustained and significant contributions to nursing education.
Fellows provide leadership in nursing education and in the Academy of Nursing Education and support the vision of the NLN to promote standards of excellence in nursing education.
Selection as a "Fellow" is accomplished through a highly competitive process. "I believe it is noteworthy that the NLN has set a gold standard for excellence in nursing education such that more and more of today's nurse educators aspire to fellowship in the academy," said Judith A. Halstead, PhD, RN, the president of the NLN.
A few of Dr. Brown's recent accomplishments include earning the designation of Certified Nurse Educator after successfully completing a rigorous certification examination developed and administered by the NLN; receiving the 2012 Helen Johnson Cremeens Excellence in Teaching Award by the Baton Rouge District Nurses Association; and her participation in the Health Information Technology Scholars program.
The HITS program is supported by a 5 year, $1.5 million grant provided by the Health Resources and Services Administration's Bureau of Health Professions in partnership with the Office of Health Information Technology. The project is administered by the University of Kansas School of Nursing in collaboration with the Schools of Nursing at the University of Colorado Denver, Johns Hopkins University, and Indiana University, in partnership with the National League for Nursing.
SU's School of Nursing has been named "Nursing School of the Year" in Louisiana for the two of the last three years.
