HU Business of Engineering summer program accepting applications from 10th graders

The Hampton University Business of Engineering summer program is currently accepting applications for its two-week program June 20-July 1. The program is for rising high-school 10th graders.

The program involves an immersion of engineering projects intertwined with business practice.  The program aims to stimulate interest in engineering and business by demonstrating the interdependence of engineering and business in making real world choices, introducing engineering methodology as a means of problem solving, exposing students to the entertaining, yet challenging world of engineering, introducing students to cutting edge, computer-aided design software used to solve day-to-day problems. The program engages students in problem solving and team-building by incorporating participation in design contests, case studies, and educational field trips.

"In this program, we expose the students to the necessary skill sets for success, emphasizing that technical and non-technical skills that are often referred to as soft skills are essential," said Dr.  Ziette Hayes, assistant professor of business administration and co-director of the BOE program.

The program is funded by the Department of Energy and managed by the HU School of Engineering and the HU School of Business.

Over the course of two weeks, students learn to engage in collaborative problem solving through interactive fun activities. Professional skills that include public speaking and oral presentation along with significant teamwork, are also emphasized throughout the camp.

"Based on previous years we have seen tremendous differences in participants' perspectives of non-technical skills on what they think they already know at the beginning of the program and what they say they gained at the end of the program," said Dr. Otsebele Nare, HU assistant professor of electrical engineering and co-director of the BOE program.
