SUSLA's Ellis appointed to Trump advisory board

Rodney A. Ellis, chancellor of Southern University at Shreveport, has been appointed to President Donald Trump's advisory board on historically black colleges and universities, the university announced Tuesday.
The advisory board writes an annual federal plan for assistance to HBCU's, advises the U.S. education secretary and makes recommendations to the president.
The board's chairman is Johnny C. Taylor Jr., CEO of the Society for Human Resources Management and former Thurgood Marshall College Fund president and CEO.
"This is an important opportunity to bring the voice of all Louisiana HBCU's to the table to inform and influence policy that directly affects our institutions, Ellis said in a statement provided by Southern University.
Ellis also serves on the Louisiana Advisory Board for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Trump has an HBCU advisory board as have earlier presidents. The schools typically are funded by a greater proportion of federal money than other colleges.
Trump's outreach to historically black colleges has been welcomed, even as some of his words and actions have caused some black leaders to question his commitment.
HBCU's grew out of the Jim Crow era, during which blacks often were barred from other universities.
