Cheyney University News January 4, 2014 Noted Fiber Artist Wendell Brown Returning to Cheyney University to Give Hands-On Quilting Workshops Wendell George Brown, a noted fiber artist, will return to Cheyney University to conduct two quilting workshops this spring. During the first session on March 29, participants will be guided through the how-to of making quilting squares using different patterns. Attendees will return for session two on April 12 with their completed squares to assemble into a 36" x 36" lap quilt. The workshops are for beginning and experienced quilters. Both sessions will take place from 9 am to noon in the Marcus Foster Student Alumni Center, 2nd Floor Auditorium. Registration costs $60. A list of supplies will be provided upon registration. Brown's 2013 exhibit, "Tracing Stitches: Exploring a National Treasure," featured a variety of his work, ranging from large three dimensional installations to small portraits of historic Cheyney University figures. His pieces appeared in the Biddle Hall Art Gallery on the historic campus last spring where he also served as a visiting professor. His quilting workshops then--which were open to outsiders--were so successful, Brown was asked to return to campus and he agreed. Brown is an assistant professor of art at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. He received his B.F.A. in Fibers/Crafts from the Maryland Institute College of Art and his M.F.A. in Painting and Sculpture from Howard University in Washington D.C. Described as "a risk taker in art " by The New York Times, Brown's works have been exhibited at The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio; the Avery Institute of Afro-American History and Culture, College of Charleston, South Carolina; and the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Brown' upcoming exhibit and workshops are sponsored by the 2014 Arts and Lectures Series at Cheyney University, which features a variety of speakers, musicians, singers, actors, and dancers from throughout the United States and abroad.
