POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

JOB TITLE:          Director of Library Services

NAME:

SUPERVISOR:    Vice President of Academic Affairs

DEPARTMENT:  Office of Academic Affairs - Library Services

FSLA:                  Exempt

OBJECTIVE:  Under general supervision, responsible for overall management of the Joseph Simeon Flipper Library, staff, resources, and services in compliance with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools standards. This position oversees 6-8 employees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  •   Develops, maintains, and updates goals and objectives pertinent to the needs of the academic programs served by the library
    
  •   Trains, coaches and evaluates library staff
    
  •   Communicates with faculty and staff as to the availability of services provided by the library, databases that assist with class curriculum; available workshops and the acquisition of new materials for each academic year
    
  •   Monitors renewals of library memberships and database dues
    
  •   Conducts regularly scheduled meetings with library staff to evaluate services, note concerns and make necessary modifications in staff assignments
    
  •   Counsels employees regarding job performance
    
  •   Monitors all Southern Association of Colleges and Schools standards for the library to maintain compliance
    
  •   Serves on committees as designated by the Vice President of Academic Affairs and upper management
    
  •   Teaches orientation classes in the absence of the Reference Librarian
    
  •   Performs other duties as directed.
    

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Responsible for:  (1) Acquisition Librarian, (1) Technical Librarian, (1) Media Services Coordinator, (1) Reference Librarian, (1) Circulation Coordinator, (1) Lab Coordinator, and (1) Library Assistant.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:  Requires a Master's degree in Library Science or Technology Research from an accredited college or university with a minimum of three (3) years of experience in Library Services at the Director or Collegiate level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Strong technology skills are mandatory.

  •      Must uphold a high standard of fairness and ethics in everyday words and actions.
    
  •      Must strive to expand knowledge and refine skills through education and training.

The physical demands and work environment described is representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  The work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment with some necessary walking to and from campus facilities.  Requires the ability to see and hear.  Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks.  Employee must be able to lift up to 10 pounds
