LINCOLN UNIVERSITY AND ONE LOVE LEARNING FOUNDATION PROMOTE AGRICULTURE IN JAMAICA

Jefferson City, MO- Lincoln University is collaborating with the One Love Learning Foundation to educate students and farmers on sustainable organic agriculture in Jamaica.  A nine-person delegation, led by Lincoln University President Dr. Kevin D. Rome, spent five days in the island country, March 15 through 20, familiarizing themselves with current Jamaican farming practices and providing insight on how the application of farming research findings can increase economic viability.  Rome was joined by Lincoln University State Specialist-Integrated Pest Management Dr. Jaime Pinero; Lincoln University State-Specialist Native Plants Dr. Nadia Navarette-Tindall; Lincoln University Regional Horticulture Educator Karen Davis; Lincoln University Coordinator for International Student Services Duwon Clark; as well as students Gerald Basco, Kayon Sincleair, Amanda Hahn and Jeri Rippeto.

The long-term goal of the collaboration is to develop an extension campus in the Caribbean nation.  The immediate result of this partnership is an exchange program that will bring farmers to the Lincoln University campus to learn more in the area of agro-science.  University officials say the benefits of this venture with the One Love Learning Foundation are countless.

"Many of our international students come to Lincoln University seeking opportunity and a way of life that might not be available in their home countries.  While the university would love to open new doors in many of the areas our international student populations represent, we are pleased to make strides in the country that brings us the largest percentage of international students," says Rome. "Partnerships like this with the One Love Learning Foundation give us the leverage we need to have the greatest impact in our work."

That impact is already felt by four prospective students who plan to attend Lincoln University to pursue agriculture-related degrees.  In addition to earning a college education, staff members say the pairing also opens up new career paths.

"This collaborative effort between Lincoln University and One Love Learning Foundation will open up new avenues for our students to compete for jobs in the global community as they gain more exposure to diverse work groups," says Clark.
