Claflin’s Convocation Launches New Academic Year; Celebrates Diversity, Globalization

Claflin will hold its 2015 Matriculation Day Convocation on Thursday, Sept. 10, in the Jonas T. Kennedy Physical Education Center. This year’s event will celebrate diversity and inclusion and the University’s commitment to globalization.

The program will begin at 11 a.m. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Claflin LEADS: Preparing 21st Century Visionaries with Global Perspectives.” The community is invited to attend.

In addition to remarks by President Henry N. Tisdale outlining the state of the University, the convocation program will also feature remarks from Dr. Marcio de Moraes, rector of Methodista University, the largest United Methodist institution in Brazil. Claflin, which is affiliated with The United Methodist Church, has an educational articulation agreement with Methodista that speaks to its global teaching and research interests.

“This year’s convocation is especially notable because we are also celebrating the growing international community on our campus,” said President Tisdale. “Diversity on our campus is recognized through our students, faculty and staff. We will continue to expand Claflin’s global reach.”

The Matriculation Day Convocation is held each year to celebrate achievements and unveil any new initiatives for the academic year. Traditionally, the program has been held at Claflin to mark the official opening of the school year.
