Harris-Stowe teams up with Wells Fargo for interactive business center

A growing partnership between Harris-Stowe State University and Wells Fargo is bringing an interactive center to budding business majors.

The Wells Fargo Finance Education Center is scheduled to open Thursday afternoon, thanks to a $250,000 grant from the financial services company.

The goal here is two-fold. A virtual trading floor and an interactive skills laboratory for Harris-Stowe State students helps them better understand what a career in the finance industry means. And the financial world needs to bolster diversityhttps://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/03/wall-street-diversifies-itself/513851/ among its employees. Harris-Stowe is one of two Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Missouri, and the only one in the St. Louis region.

"We create better outcomes through valuing differences, and increasing diversity in our industry gets us closer to that goal," Wells Fargo Advisors president David Kowach said in a statement. "Expanding opportunities in higher education - particularly at St. Louis' only historically black college/university - is nothing but a win for our region."

In addition to helping diversity, the industry needs more of the type of training students can get from this real-time experience, Kowach said.

The center has a trading floor and stock ticker with real-time market information. Accompanying software helps students learn from investment decisions.

"Harris-Stowe State University's mission is to provide outstanding educational opportunities for individuals seeking a rich and engaging academic experience," Harris-Stowe State president Dwaun Warmack said in a statement. "The Wells Fargo Finance Education Center will award unprecedented opportunities to nurture intellectual curiosity and build authentic skills that prepare Harris-Stowe students for leadership roles in a global society."

All Harris-Stowe students will have access to the room, and the school hopes to host community education opportunities in the center soon.
