Angela Brown combines education and entertainment at “Opera... from a Sistah’s Point of View” program at Cheyney University on February 9

On Tuesday, February 9, Grammy-nominated vocalist Angela Brown will unite opera, pop and gospel in one sensational voice as she takes stage at Cheyney University to perform "Opera...from a Sistah's Point of View". Her inspired show, part of Cheyney's 2015-16 Arts and Lectures Series, has gained international notoriety for bringing opera to the masses in the form of an edgy, yet educational, concert presentation.

The 7:30 pm program in Marian Anderson Music Center Auditorium will capitalize on Brown’s goal to “draw a general audience to opera and to help them develop an appreciation for opera; to expose diverse populations to opera in such a way that they feel comfortable attending an opera; to entertain an audience with classical music in such a way that they do not feel intimidated by it but can easily relate to it; and to educate the audience about how to approach opera and how to prepare to attend and enjoy an opera production.”

The hilarious, educational narrative is interspersed with musical selections as she dispels the myths of opera with humor and charm. Each aria is explained in context of the opera’s plot with a narrative that is comical, delightful and involves the audience.

Brown, who personifies the ideal soprano with her sheer vocal power, will reprise the role of Addie Parker in Yardbird at The Apollo in New York City this April and again for Lyric Opera of Chicago in 2017.
