SHAW UNIVERSITY IHSCR AWARDED United Negro College Fund Special Programs $20,000 GRANT

Raleigh, NC - Shaw University's Institute for Health, Social, and Community Research (IHSCR) has received a $20,000 United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation (UNCFSP) grant as part of an initiative in partnership with the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to promote increased utilization of NLM online health resources for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) campuses and their surrounding communities.

In response to the disparities in morbidity and mortality among underserved populations, the UINCFSP/NLM HBCU ACCESS Project was launched in 2002.  As the recipient of 2011-2012 UNCFSP/NLM HBCU ACCESS award, Shaw's project focus is community and campus empowerment through awareness and access to online health information.

"Awareness and access are key components to engaging and empowering people with accurate and reliable health-related information to improve their health and quality of life" said Renee Myatt, ECHI principal investigator. "Shaw University is a community and academic resource and advocate."

The Shaw Empowerment through Consumer Health Information (ECHI) is a collaborative partnership that engages the Shaw University Freshmen Studies Program, Shaw's Natural Sciences & Mathematics Department, the City of Raleigh Information Technology Department, the Southeast Raleigh Assembly and the Central Citizens Advisory Council in a collaborative process aimed at enhancing knowledge and utilization of the NLM online consumer health information databases.
