Supercomputer Dedication Marks Expansion of Bowie State's Research Capacity

The dedication of Bowie State University's new high-performance supercomputer - and an opportunity to attend a hands-on workshop to learn to use it - on Wednesday, Oct. 19 signals an exciting development in expanding the research capacity for faculty and students alike.

President Mickey L. Burnim will join faculty in the Department of Computer Science to formally recognize the purchase of the XC40 supercomputer, named the Sphinx. The supercomputer was acquired last fall through a $445,500 grant from the Department of Defense U.S. Army Research Office.

Faculty and student researchers in cybersecurity, computer forensics, life sciences and other disciplines will be able to learn how to use the supercomputer to process and compute large amounts of data. The Sphinx is capable of processing trillions of calculations per second - calculations that would take hours on a personal computer will take a few minutes on the Sphinx. Equipped with the latest advances in processing technologies, Sphinx will provide the core capability for the university's new Center for High-Performance Information Processing (CHIP).

Principal investigator Dr. Hoda El-Sayed, along with two co-principal investigators, will use Sphinx in their ongoing research projects. Professor El-Sayed is conducting extensive testing on new parallel computer programming models with graduate student researchers. Professor George Ude and his student team is sequencing large databases of DNA barcodes to identify and classify species through a collaboration with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, one of the nation's leading research institutes. Associate Professor Bo Yang analyzing big data-generating applications using computer forensics.
