Albany Herald June 22, 2012 Summit at Albany State Labeled Success Educators from Southwest Georgia gathered at Albany State University recently for the second annual Educators' Summit sponsored by the ASU College of Education. The event was funded by the College of Education and, in part, through a Teacher Quality grant from the Board of Regents. Auburn University faculty members Marilyn E. Strutchens, president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, and Mildred C. Fraley, distinguished professor of mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching, and W. Gary Martin, principal investigator for "Transforming East Alabama Mathematics" and co-director of the Mathematics Teacher Education Partnership, were featured speakers at the Summit. Strutchens and Martin collaborated with educators in exploring instructional strategies that promote student and parental engagement in mathematics education. The summit focused on mathematics education and offered professional development opportunities for educators in reading, mathematics and science. Strutchens demonstrated the use of literature for providing a context for mathematical problem solving, emphasizing that with this approach, parents and children learn together. Martin encouraged participants to examine the implications of adopting the common core and explore the meaning of the concept in terms of how mathematics will be taught. Strutchens, Martin and area educator/presenters collaborated with participants to demonstrate the use of instructional materials and approaches for engaging learners. Also presenting at the seminar were Queen Brown of Georgia Southwestern State University, Carolyn Taylor and Victoria D. Johnson of the Dougherty County School System, Quannekqua Norris of the Terrell County School System, Shunterra Lucy, an ASU graduate student, and faculty and staff from Albany State University. Participants received lesson plans, activity books and handouts that focused on engaging learners. SANDRA M.
