Dr. Mary Anne Akers, dean of Morgan State University's School of Architecture and Planning (SAP), is in her first year of service after being appointed by Governor O'Malley to the Maryland Parks Advisory Commission. The panel develops ongoing recommendations and proposes new or enhanced strategies to the Governor and secretary of the Department of Natural Resources for promoting and improving state parks in Maryland.

Appointed by the Governor in 2008, Evan Richardson, assistant to the dean of SAP, is completing his first term as a state commissioner on the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture (MCAAHC). This commission serves as the statewide clearinghouse for documenting and preserving evidence of the African American experience in Maryland.
