Tuskegee presents white coats to 54 vet med students

Marking their transition to the clinical phase of the veterinary medical curriculum, Tuskegee University's College of Veterinary Medicine presented the 54 students comprising its Class of 2019 with their "white coats" on Monday, Nov. 6. The Annual White Coat Ceremony, held at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, included faculty and staff, family members, friends and special guests in addition to the student honorees.

"We are proud of the Class of 2019 and appreciate the support of their families, friends and love-ones as they achieve their goal of becoming career-ready veterinarians," said Dr. Ruby L. Perry, the college's dean.

Representatives of the veterinary medical associations that sponsored and donated white coats to the students of their states included Dr. Charles Ashwander, president, Alabama Veterinary Medical Association (ALVMA); and Dr. Jennifer Quammen, vice president, Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association (KVMA). Dr. Wendi Lilly-Bare, president, South Carolina Association of Veterinarians (SCAV), who was unable to attend, provided South Carolina students written congratulations.

Dr. Roslyn Casimir-Whittington, the college's associate dean for academic and student affairs. , presided over the program. Special guests also in attendance and who offered congratulations to members of the Class of 2019 included Dr. Calvin M. Johnson, dean of Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine; Dr. Harvey Crumm, senior academic liaison with Zoetis Animal Health; and Tuskegee veterinary medicine alumni Dr. Beverly Miller '05 and Dr. Gay Smith '99, both with Banfield Pet Hospital. Both Zoetis Animal Health and Banfield Pet Hospital helped to sponsor the event.
