By Tina Joly

ASU alumni donated more than $173,000 to the University's Trust for Educational Excellence during the annual Alumni Challenge Breakfast on Wednesday, Nov. 24.
Hundreds of Alabama State University alumni broke bread and gave back to their alma mater at the annual Turkey Day Classic Alumni Challenge Breakfast.

The event was held Tuesday, Nov. 24, at the Renaissance Hotel and Spa in downtown Montgomery.

Alumni answered the University’s challenge and donated more than $173,000 to ASU’s Trust for Educational Excellence.

Guests at the breakfast were greeted by ASU cheerleaders and the Mighty Marching Hornets Band.
Danielle Kennedy-Lamar, vice president for University Relations, served as emcee. She said University leadership is excited to have support from alumni.

“We are absolutely delighted that you have decided to be challenged to do awesome work for your alma mater,” said Kennedy-Lamar

Greetings were delivered by Angel Moore, Miss Alabama State University, Ashley Thomas, SGA president, Lucius Black Jr., National Alumni Association president and Elton N. Dean, Chairman of ASU’s Board of Trustees.

Africa Miranda, (B.A. ’99) challenged fellow alumni to donate $2,500 using social networking technology.

“I’ve created the ‘Africa Miranda ASU Alumni Ambassador Fund.’ It’s an online donation link. It’s posted live to Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. Anyone can go online and make a donation,” Miranda said.

Zillah Fluker, associate vice president of development said she asked, and alumni answered.
“The alumni have spoken. We have received overwhelming support. I would like to thank everyone who has generously donated,” Fluker said.

Attendees also received an update on the many transformations taking place at the University from Dr. William H. Harris, ASU president; Dr. Alfred Smith, interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs; and Dr. John F. Knight Jr., executive vice president and chief operating officer.
