Scholarships bestowed at annual STUDS Club Holiday Scholarship Social
In 1946, STUDS (short for students) was founded by college students and graduates as a way to promote higher education, fellowship, social activities and civic engagement. The club's insignia, the rooster crowing at sun-up, signifying the "Awakening to the Dawn of a New Day," exemplifies the group's commitment to the community's future.
On Nov. 22, the group held its annual Holiday Scholarship Social, where in addition to seasonal feting, the group handed out scholarships to area Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Representatives of five HBCUs - Dillard University, Southern University/New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Xavier University and Grambling State University -- were on hand to accept the scholarships presented by STUDS Corresponding Secretary Dwayne K. Pierce. STUDS members were introduced to the audience by President David Williams, followed by STUDS members Preston Edwards and Charles F. Webb Jr. being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Joseph L. Patin Jr., STUDS Past President and Hall of Fame Selection Committee, made the announcement. STUDS Vice-President Raymond C. Brown spoke, telling the audience about the club's projects.
Among the more than 300 who attended the soiree at La Belle Place in Laplace were STUDS members and guests Mr. and Mrs. Terrel Broussard, Mr. and Mrs. Dwayne Pierce, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Maheia, James Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mitchell, Dr. and Mrs. Warren McKenna, Mr. Sean Bruno, Mr. and Mrs. Lee C.
