ASU Board Approves Contract for New President

During its Jan. 3 meeting, ASU's Board unanimously approved a two-year contract for President-elect Gwendolyn Boyd.

Alabama State University's Board of Trustees met today and unanimously approved a two-year contract for Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd, who was selected last month as ASU's new president.

"I feel good about our choice," Board Chairman Elton Dean said. "I am looking for great things from Dr. Boyd. The Board is going to work with her 100 percent. We are going to be the policymakers, and she will be the C.E.O. I believe everyone is going to be pleased with the direction that ASU is going."

The contract, effective Feb. 1, includes options for renewal in 2016. Boyd's base salary will be $300,000 annually.

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley, who serves on ASU's Board, said he believes Boyd is an excellent choice.

"I am very pleased with the choice that the Board has made and the recommendation coming from the search committee," Bentley said. "She is a great representative for the University, and she is going to do a fantastic job and move this University forward."

Following a nearly year-long search process, the Board unanimously selected Boyd as the University's new president in a meeting on Dec. 20, 2013. She will become the 14th president to serve in the position in the school's 146-year history and the first woman. She will succeed Interim President and President Emeritus William H. Harris.

Boyd previously served as an engineer and executive assistant to the Applied Physics Laboratory chief of staff at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C., where she has worked for the past 33 years.

Boyd is a former Miss Alabama State University and an initiate of ASU's Beta Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She earned a B.S. in mathematics from ASU and became the first African-American to earn a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Yale University. She also holds a doctoral degree in ministry from Howard University.

Her history of leadership is extensive. She served as national president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., chaired the Johns Hopkins Diversity Leadership Council, and was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the Barry Goldwater Foundation for Excellence in Education.
