Howard University News January 6, 2012 Howard Delegates Celebrate USA - ANC Centennial in South Africa WASHINGTON (January 6, 2012) - Howard University delegates are in South Africa with the USA - ANC Centenary Committee to mark the 100-year celebration of the USA-ANC and Howard's historic ties to South Africa. USA - ANC Co-Chairs, Dr. Jean Bailey, and Dr. Joseph Harris are accompanied by nine other Howard delegates traveling through Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, and Manguang to participate in this historic event. The celebrations will convene this evening with the official kick-off of the ANC centennial anniversary in Waaihoek, Mangaung, the founding place of the ANC, followed by an inter-faith vigil, intercultural celebrations, a presidential centennial Gala, and other celebrations with ANC leaders and dignitaries. Events will conclude on Sunday, Jan. 8. This is one of the many local and international events that will mark the centennial anniversary of the oldest national liberation movement in the world. The overall goal of the USA - ANC Centenary Committee is to coordinate ANC centennial activities in the United States, acting as the chief liaison between regional groups, the South African Embassy and the ANC. The USA - ANC Centenary Celebrations highlight the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa and serve as a celebration of other continent-wide, anti-colonial movements. The Committee members include Dr. Joseph Harris, Dr. Jean Bailey, Danny Glover, Harry Belafonte, James Early, Nicole Lee TransAfrica Forum and Dr. Elsie Scott.
