Johnson C. Smith University Opens Burger King on Campus
Johnson C. Smith University celebrated the grand opening of the only Burger King on a college campus in North Carolina today. Located in the Mary Joyce Taylor Crisp Student Union, the restaurant is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Operated by Perkins Management Services of Charlotte, the Burger King at JCSU is the first on a college campus in the nation to offer Coca-Cola Company's Freestyle proprietary drink fountains.
To commemorate the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and Dr. King's message of service to the poor, the grand opening will kick-off a canned food drive to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. For each donation of two canned goods brought to the JCSU Burger King, donors will receive a coupon for free fries. The food drive will continue throughout the week until Friday, Jan. 24.
"The addition of Burger King takes us one step closer to helping solve the food desert in the Northwest Corridor," said Dr. Ronald L. Carter, president of Johnson C. Smith University. "Adding another pubic restaurant in the area will also provide jobs for our local citizens and students."
Perkins Management Services is also planning to open Blu Bayou restaurant at Mosaic Village on West Trade Street, as well as Red Mango Frozen Yogurt and Salad Works on campus. It recently opened Laurene's Cafeteria on Beatties Ford Road. The new Burger King and these establishments have an estimated employment impact of more than 150 new jobs.
"The opening of the Burger King on campus is the first step in the transformation of the dining service experience at JCSU," said Nicholas Perkins, CEO and president of Perkins Management Services. "We are excited about the future and the many great things we have in store for the campus and the community."
