Texas Southern University July 2, 2014 Tom Joyner Foundation Hercules Scholar(s) Named Texas Southern University was the Tom Joyner Foundation's School of the Month for June which is part of its on-going effort to help keep students in historically black colleges and universities. The Hercules Scholarship is named after Joyner's father, the late Hercules Joyner, who was a strong supporter of higher education. Each week during June a male student who is a campus leader involved in the community with a career goal toward making a difference in the quality of life for his race with at least a 3.5 GPA received a $1,500 scholarship grant announced live on the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show. Texas Southern University Hercules Scholarship recipients were: Knubian Gatlin, a sophomore Dietetics major from Spring. Gatlin, who plans to become a clinical dietitian and business owner, has a 3.80 GPA, volunteers at a homeless shelter, serves as a peer tutor, partners with his mother to provide fitness and training, and volunteers at a local health facility for the underserved; Jared Artmore, a sophomore Pre-Pharmacy major from Beaumont. Artmore, who desires to continue to expand his knowledge in the medical field, has a 3.64 GPA, is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Thomas F. Freeman Honors College and the Urban Academic Village, and plays tuba in the Texas Southern University Wind Ensemble; Derrick Smallwood, a sophomore Finance major from DeSoto. Smallwood, who currently serves as a Wells Fargo Sophomore Leader in the company's Summer Financial Analyst Program, has a 3.84 GPA, is a member of the Thomas F. Freeman Honor College, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Golden Key International Honor Society; and Keilon Robinson, Jr., a sophomore double majoring in chemistry and mathematics from Houston. Robinson has a 3.91 GPA and plans to become a petroleum engineer. At TSU, Keilon is a member of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, the Urban Academic Village, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the American Chemistry Society, and the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemist and Chemical Engineers.
