Subject: Free Live Webinar - Tuesday, April 21st - Publish or Perish? An Academic Writing Institute for AUC Junior Faculty

Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well.  Today I'm celebrating Dr. Nathan Hare. Born in 1933 in Slick, Oklahoma, Hare became an instructor and assistant professor in sociology at Howard University.  Hare joined the faculty of San Francisco State College (now San Francisco State University) and became the program coordinator of the school's Black Studies program, the first in the United States. This earned him the title "father of Black Studies" by scholars. Hare founded the scholarly periodical, The Black Scholar: A Journal of Black Studies and Research in 1969. He left the journal in 1975 to work as a clinical psychologist in community health programs, hospitals, and in private practice.

Free Live On-Line Webinar - Tuesday, April 21st, 3:00 ET - Publish or Perish? An Academic Writing Institute for Atlanta University Center Junior Faculty

Description

Academic libraries, as scholarly hubs, are well positioned to assist junior faculty members in navigating the world of academic writing and publishing. Paramount to maintaining a successfully publishing faculty is the need to provide a nurturing research environment while assisting them in addressing their unique publishing needs. In 2014 the AUC Woodruff Library offered a new and emerging type of research support by hosting a two-day academic writing institute, funded by the HBCU Library Alliance's Expanding Library Support for Faculty Research in HBCUs grant, to address the research and writing needs of junior faculty affiliated with the four campuses the Library serves.

In this webinar, Dr. Rosaline Odom and Ms. Emy Nelson Decker will present their project, entitled, "Publish or Perish? An Academic Writing Institute for Atlanta University Center Junior Faculty," and describe the ways in which librarians developed the writing institute in direct response to the need for research and writing support as demonstrated by junior faculty. The webinar will also provide an overview of the writing institute as it was conducted, briefly analyze the assessment results, and provide information for how this project will continue to evolve within this environment.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session participants will have:

  1. Knowledge about the steps involved in developing and implementing a library-sponsored academic writing institute for junior faculty

  2. A better understanding about research tools and writing activities that faculty find most beneficial

  3. Strategies for delivering multimodal research and academic writing support to faculty research and writing

  4. A template for developing an academic writing institute for faculty on their own campuses

Suggested Attendance

This program is scalable and would be of interest to academic librarians who may wish to implement similar institutes in their own academic libraries.
