HU Library Presents 'Black History in the Commonwealth: The Insurrection of Nat Turner, Did Hollywood Get It Right?' Panel Discussion
The Hampton University William R. and Norma B. Harvey Library in conjunction with the Department of Political Science & History and the History Club present "Black History in the Commonwealth: The Insurrection of Nat Turner, Did Hollywood Get It Right?" panel discussion, Thursday Feb. 23, in the 1st floor Harvey Library meeting room.
This panel discussion will focus on "The Birth of a Nation", a recent film about Nat Turner's Rebellion in Southampton County, VA which drew both praise and controversy.  Excerpts from the film will be viewed during this event, followed by panelists who will discuss the oral history of the insurrection as well as its film interpretation. The panel will feature several local historians including Bruce Turner,http://www.cbsnews.com/news/60-minutes-descendants-disagree-about-1831-slave-revolt/ the great-great-great grandson of Nat Turner.

"The Harvey Library is pleased to collaborate with the Department of Political Science and History, and the History Club to present this event to the university community as part of our programming for Black History Month," said Tina Rollins, Library Director. " Stories such as Nat Turner's Rebellion are often left from our history books and become part of the untold narratives of our struggles for freedom.  This event will seek to enlighten attendees regarding the impact this event had on both local and national history, and also discuss adaption of black history in film."
