Famed Hollywood Director Colin 'Topper' Carew Funds Scholarship for Innovative Female Students at HU
Esteemed scholar and celebrated Hollywood producer/director Colin Topper Carew delivered a captivating keynote address to an audience of Hampton University administrators and faculty at this year's Faculty Institute on August 24. Before his speech was over Carew donated his honorarium and promised to match it to help a female student realize her dreams as an innovator. He asked that the scholarship be named after his late wife, HU alumna Alyce S. Carew, who devoted her life to promoting diversity in the entertainment industry.
"This is a promising opportunity for the bright and talented young women who are already doing great things here at Hampton and who are destined to be game changers in the growing fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math," said Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey. "We thank Dr. Carew for his investment in the future of students here at Hampton."
Carew is a visiting scholar at the MIT Media Laboratory where he encourages innovation and does so with a keen eye on developing future innovators at HBCUs.  Many know him for his comedic writing and producing, showcased in the popular Fox network show, "Martin," with Martin Lawrence.
Carew's talent for funny lines was not lost on the crowd of HU educators when he echoed a question posed by HU Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. JoAnn Haysbert,  "Hampton are you ready?"  The answer was a resounding, "Yes, we are," ushering in what promises to be highly innovative 2015-2016 academic year.
Haysbert emphasized the University's new technology innovation center instituted by Dr. Harvey. She encouraged faculty members to think outside the box and create more interdisciplinary and collaborative learning experiences for students.
Carew expounded on what Haysbert said.
"In order to remain competitive and relevant, HBCUs need to position themselves to produce the technology experts needed in Silicon Valley," he said. "We must position ourselves for the future technology-driven economy and we must gain access to the new political playing field or we will fall behind and out of sight and our mission will suffer."

Carew ended by saying that HU is moving in the right direction. "Hampton you are destined for technological greatness."
