* Morehouse School of Medicine News * 10/1/2010 Morehouse School of Medicine President Appointed to New Commission Created by Health Care Reform Law ATLANTA - Dr. John E. Maupin Jr., president of Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), is set to take a leading role in the national health care conversation about access. On Sept. 30, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) named Dr. Maupin<http://www.gao.gov/press/nhcwc_2010sep30.html> to the new National Health Care Workforce Commission, created by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. "Today's appointees bring impressive expertise and professional credentials to their role of advising policymakers on ways to improve the health care workforce which is so essential to ensuring the health and safety of the American people," said Gene L. Dodaro, head of the GAO. Dr. Maupin is one of the first 15 members to be appointed to the Commission, and will serve a two-year term. The Commission will act as a national resource for the President, Congress, states and localities to make policy recommendations about the health care workforce needs of minority, rural and medically underserved communities. With the Center for American Progress predicting a shortage of 200,000 physicians and one million nurses in the U.S. by 2020, supporters believe the Commission will be critical in ensuring that enough health care workers serve in vulnerable communities. Beyond making policy recommendations for these populations, the Commission could affect thousands of medical students by creating scholarships for them to practice in medically underserved areas. "I'm honored by this appointment and I know that the future success of health reform efforts is highly dependent upon the quality and diversity of tomorrow's health workforce," said Dr. Maupin. "I look forward to working with my other distinguished colleagues in this important endeavor". Morehouse School of Medicine is one of the top producers of physicians who choose to focus their efforts in underserved communities. MSM was named the top-ranked medical school in the nation in the area of social mission, earlier this year.
