Students Set Sights on Leadership during 2013 Claflin Business Week

There comes a time when students transition into being leaders and teachers of their calling. That's the focus of the 2013 Claflin University Business Week, which will feature various speakers, workshops, panel discussions and presentations starting on Monday, Feb. 18.

"We have an intense desire to transform all our students into visionaries of the business community," said Dr. Harpal Grewal, dean of the School of Business. "This week, Claflin will present business leaders who are at the pinnacle of their fields to show our students that there are many paths to success."

This year's theme is "Today's Students, Tomorrow's Business Leaders." Grewal said there will be a diverse group of business professionals discussing a variety of topics ranging from human resources to technology.

The five-day event opens at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 18 in Ministers' Hall. South Carolina radio personality Cynthia Hardy, host of OnPoint!, will lead a discussion on how students can successfully graduate from college and enter the workforce. Tuesday at 2 p.m., Major General Abraham Turner, executive director of the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce, will speak in Room 123 of the Grace Thomas Kennedy Business and Communications Building.

On Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 9 a.m. in Ministers' Hall, the topic will be "Technology Leadership: A New Business Paradigm" with Tom Persons, president of the S.C. Technology Alliance, serving as the keynote speaker.

Dr. Tyrone Washington, manufacturing engineering lead of Boeing Corporation in South Carolina, will address "Teaching Students by Executive Leaders" at 12:30 p.m. in Room 123 of the Grace Thomas Kennedy Building on Thursday, Feb. 21.

Business Week will conclude on Friday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. in Room 123 of the Grace Thomas Kennedy Building. The closing session will feature a roundtable discussion centered on entrepreneurship and a talent show featuring Claflin students. President Dr. Henry N. Tisdale will provide closing remarks.

Senior marketing major and aspiring fashion designer Brittany Salley is ready to take in all of the knowledge and advice available during the Business Week activities.

"I'm excited about Business Week because it exhibits how Claflin is taking the initiative to transform students into business leaders outside of the classroom. The entire week will be very informative, and I look forward to the entrepreneurship event on Friday the most because I am an aspiring entrepreneur."
