West Virginia State University News March 25, 2014 WVSU Chapter of National Broadcasting Society Receives Community Service Award The West Virginia State University (WVSU) Chapter of the National Broadcasting Society - Alpha Epsilon Rho has received the organization's grand prize award for Best Campaign Community Service. The WVSU's Chapter's campaign was "Learn to Serve, Serve to Learn," and involved 12 community service projects including WVSU Cares Day, two campus blood drives, Angel Tree, Alzheimer's Memory Walk and other activities. "This recognition is well-deserved as these students work hard to give back to community members throughout the Kanawha Valley and support their fellow Yellow Jackets whenever and wherever needed," President Brian O. Hemphill said. "They truly exhibit Yellow Jacket spirit and I am honored to have such dedicated members of the State family." The Chapter received the award as part of the 72nd Annual Conference and Convention of the National Broadcasting Society (NBS) in Burbank, Calif., March 11-16. "I am so proud of our students and the work they do. Our wins, nominations and presence in this national organization are proof that what is done here is every bit as excellent as what much larger schools produce," said Kim Cobb, Assistant Professor for Communications and co-advisor to the WVSU Chapter of NBS. "This validates our students' experiences and the great opportunities they have as students at WVSU." In addition to Cobb and fellow NBS co-advisor Sherri Shafer, the following WVSU students attended the national convention; James Olah, Scotty O. White, Forrest Carter, Jenn Carpenter, Adam Striker, John Cantees, Brooke Lewis, Leslie Bragg and Earon Peyton. In addition to attending conference sessions, WVSU students and advisors took in live television show tapings of: "@Midnight," which airs on Comedy Central; "The Price is Right," the long-running CBS game show; and "About A Boy," a new NBC situation comedy. The WVSU chapter is comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students interested in media and communications. The National Broadcasting Society - Alpha Epsilon Rho, is a student and professional society with more than 85 chapters on college, university, community college and high school campuses. The Society had its beginning in the early 1940's on the campus of Stephens College in Columbia, Miss. Over 30,000 individuals have been initiated into the society since its founding. SANDRA M.
