The City of Norfolk Public Library is seeking a creative and dynamic professional to coordinate and manage its digital images projects as the Digital Images Coordinator. This position, part of the staff of the local history and genealogy department, the Sargeant Memorial Collection, supports the library's strategic direction to enhance local history and genealogy resources of the SMC-- providing access to its resources for citizens and visitors.
The Digital Images Coordinator will serve as NPL's expert relating to all aspects of the digital collections and activities-taking the lead role in archiving, scanning, copying, researching, verifying, descriptive cataloging, and making available on the NPL website the approximately 60,000 historical images in the SMC collection.
Essential Functions:
Oversees the Digital Images Project (DIP) and develops policies/procedures.
Develops the mission statement, goals and objectives for the digital project and prepares the annual work plan for the department.
Prioritizes the individual photographer's collections and content for digitization.
Establishes the filing system for VP articles and verifies image subject headings.
Verifies catalog, metadata, and publishes items to the Web.
Works with architects and vendors with regard to technology plans and equipment for the new Main Library (Slover Memorial), especially for the SMC.
Works with NPL IT staff to develop content for Sargeant Memorial Collection (SMC), and digital displays for Slover's interactive displays website.
Serves on the job description and interview committee for Slover/SMC positions.
Trains staff on SMC equipment and procedures.
Creates and updates collection policy for digital content.
Reviews content management programs software with City IT and NPL IT.
Oversees collection development and maintenance for the DIP.
Administers budget and accounts for the DIP.
Promotes the use of the collection through outreach, teaching, and exhibits.
Education/Experience:
ALA-accredited master's degree in Library or Information Science or master's degree in History/Archival Studies or related field
Professional library experience
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team based environment and maintain positive working relationships
Ability to plan, manage, and oversee multiple projects, meet deadlines, and prioritize work in alignment with the strategic goals of the Library
Knowledge of existing and emerging library technologies; knowledge of current trends and new developments in digital library initiatives and special collections
Knowledge of metadata standards, such as Dublin Core, METS, EAD
Familiarity with current trends and emerging issues regarding copyright, digital rights management, and open access as they relate to institutional repositories
Experience working with digital collections including the management of digitization projects
A strong commitment to public service
Ability to learn and teach new technologies quickly
Demonstrates excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
Additional Information & Requirements:
At least 2 years supervisory experience
At least 3 - 5 years experience involving a digital project or other project management experience
At least 3 - 5 experience working with archival or special collections materials
Experience providing reference and instruction services
Experience with developing collections and administering departmental budgets
Experience working collaboratively to develop special collections programs and exhibitions in both print and digital formats
Monday - Sunday, some evenings and weekend work may be required.
Location: Sargeant Memorial Collection, Norfolk Public Library
Candidates for interview may be requested to provide a writing sample and/or a presentation relating to a digital images project or task.
