Hampton University News June 4, 2018 Hampton University Students Receive Scholarship in Honor and Remembrance of the Life of Joseph K. Bose Hampton University Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications has chosen two recipients of the 2017-2018 Joseph K. Bose Endowed Scholarship: current HU student Donald Huskey and alumnus Phillip Jackson, a 2017 graduate of the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications. They both received $1,000. The Joseph K. Bose Endowed Scholarship is an annual scholarship given to a well-deserving Hampton University junior male student majoring in journalism with a grade point average of 2.5 or better. The Joseph K. Bose Endowed Scholarship was formed in memory of Joseph Bose who was shot and killed in 2015. He was a promising journalism student in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications with an optimistic approach to life. The creation of the Joseph K. Bose Endowed Scholarship allows other students with a passion for journalism to be able to thrive. Bose was shot to death outside a party in Norfolk on October 31, 2015. Norfolk police are still looking for the gunman. Friends and family are waiting on answers surrounding his death and urge anyone with information to come forward. "We need to continue fighting for justice for Joseph," said DàVida Plummer, Dean of the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications. "He is a bright star in the distance whose life was dimmed too soon. We are committed to keeping his memory alive here on campus and we all need to continue putting pressure on law enforcement to find the personal responsible for taking Joseph away from us." This year's current student recipient, Huskey, is a junior in the Hampton University Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications, majoring in journalism. He has a 3.5 GPA and is a staff writer for the student-run newspaper, The Hampton Script. "Receiving the Joseph K. Bose scholarship is truly an honor and shows that hard work always pays off," said Huskey. "I'm grateful for having excellent professors to assist me, along with supportive peers. I know that if I continue to implement a strong work ethic and core values, my aspirations will be obtainable in the near future." Huskey is currently working with The Washington Times throughout the summer as a sports writer and hopes to receive a full time job with the company after graduation. "Donald consistently displays passion for his studies and future career in journalism, and goes out of his way to assist his classmates when needed," said Patricia Boone, Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications. "He is a worthy recipient of this award and it will serve as a monetary boon toward his academic endeavors." Phillip Jackson, the alumnus recipient and a close friend of Bose who helped organize a candlelight vigil for him, graduated from Hampton University in May of 2017 with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and a minor in Leadership Studies. During his undergraduate career, Jackson worked for The Hampton Script and served as an intern with The Root and WETA-PBS. He was also selected as a fellow for the Politico Journalism Institute and attended the 2015 Online News Association Conference as an HBCU Digital Media fellow. Currently, Jackson is a full-time reporter covering education for the Philadelphia Tribune and a freelance reporter for Billy Penn covering the District Attorney's office. "When I was told I received the scholarship that was started for Joe, I was so happy that Hampton University decided to start something in honor of him and showed an effort that says his name won't be forgotten," said Jackson. "I still to this day think about the day I got the news and how difficult it was for my friends and me to have to cope with school and with the death of a close friend. I hope the next person who receives the scholarship stays involved in their journalism school and challenges the way they think on a normal basis. One of the best things about Joe was the discussions we had and how he challenged all of our thinking." Those who would like to donate to the Joseph K.
