The Atlanta University Center - Robert W. Woodruff Library supports the teaching and learning missions of four institutions of higher learning that comprise the world's largest consortium of HBCUs-Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, and Spelman College.  Conveniently located and easily accessible to the campuses, the Woodruff Library is the center of the intellectual and social life at the Atlanta University Center.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Atlanta University Center - Robert W. Woodruff Library is committed to displaying excellence in our delivery of service and is known for transformative change in innovative services and programs.  This is evidenced by our library's recognition in the "university library" category for the 2016 ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award.  To continue our excellence in program and services, the library is seeking an experienced candidate for the position of Library Development Officer.  Reporting to the Library's CEO and Library Director, with dotted line reporting to the Assistant Director of Planning, Assessment and Communications, the Development Officer will provide administrative and project management oversight for the library's fund raising activities.  This includes prospect research, preparation of proposals consistent with the library's goals, and initiating and developing relationships with current and prospective donors. Working with the Director and other managers the incumbent will establish annual fundraising goals for the organization.  This position is also responsible for overseeing special library events to include ensuring all events are executed and evaluated based on established guidelines and a shared great customer service ethic; facilitating conversation about the impact of library events, services and resources, in the social space.

Essential duties

  •    Lead the preparation of funding proposals and grant applications
    
  •    Researching and identifying government, corporate and foundation grant funding opportunities.
    
  •    Develop procedures for consistent, effective  grant application methodology
    
  •    Coordinate internal grant submission processes to ensure compliance with funder guidelines.
    
  •    Research grant opportunities
    
  •    Develop proposal abstracts and related information on potential funders
    
  •    Coordinate onsite grant development and writing workshops for Library staff
    
  •    Establish an individual donor program in support of Library programs, services and resources.
    
  •    Plan and implement strategies for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and tracking gifts from individuals.
    
  •    Create opportunities for individual donor recognition, i.e., naming opportunities, within the Library and provide information about gift utilization to prospects and donors.
    
  •    Establish and maintain contact with prospects to develop interest and participation in major Library projects.
    
  •    Meet with individual prospects to cultivate interest, provide information on projects of interests and solicit gifts.
    
  •    Coordinate administrative and logistical activities for special library events and establish practices for consistent implementation
    
  •    Negotiate space/facilities use contracts
    
  •    Oversee production of invitations and other event collateral
    
  •    Propose and execute new ideas to improve event management
    
  •    Collaborate with internal departments and external vendors to ensure all event details are addressed and implemented effectively
    
  •    Conduct pre and post event evaluations and report outcomes
    
  •    Track event finances and provide periodic reports for event projects
    
  •    Maintain events calendar and event attendance statistics
    
  •    Coordinate organization of packets of materials for event distribution
    
  •    Support the Library's Friends' Council (e.g. event organization)
    
  •    Create corporate sponsorship packages in support of major Library events.
    
  •    Utilize social media to raise the visibility of the Library, communicate information about events and Library activities and attract new prospects and donors.
    
  •    Serves as a member of the library's Social Media Working Group
    

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree: preferred concentration in Business Administration, Economics, English, Public Administration, or Communication
  • Master of Library Science (MLS) preferred
  • A minimum of five years experience in fundraising for higher education and/or libraries
  • Experience budgeting and reconciling financial data for grant activities and reporting
  • Familiarity with HBCUs and the local and national philanthropic communities
  • Ability to work with diverse audiences; experience with volunteer groups
  • Excellent communications skills (including writing, proofreading and public speaking)
  • Ability to accomplish projects with minimal supervision
  • Great customer service ethics and high expectations for quality
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills (experience with project management a plus)
  • Able to think critically and problem solve
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to interface with internal and external customers with diplomacy and tact
  • Detail oriented with demonstrated focus on judgment, accuracy, and timelines
  • Excellent information-technology skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, Cloud applications, social media and presentation software
  • Experience with federal grant writing preferred
