Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well.  Today I'm EXCITED to solicit your interest in an HBCU Library Alliance proposal to the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) for their Digitizing Hidden Special Collections and Archives program. CLIR's work focuses on strategies to enhance resource and teaching in collaboration with libraries and higher learning communities. Visit the CLIR website at http://www.clir.org/hiddencollections for more information.

Initial full proposals are due by Thursday, April 30. If interested, we must work quickly to gather and compile the requested information.

About the Program:

  1. Funded wholly by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, $4M will be awarded in 2015

  2. Scholarship is primary criterion

  • supports digitization of substantial (bulk, rather than boutique) proportions of collections of significant scholarly value
  • promotes strategic partnerships
  • promotes best practices for ensuring long-term availability of the collection
  • ensures digital content is made available to the public
  1. Partnerships or consortia may apply for between $50K and $500K, with projects lasting between 12 and 36 months. Projects must begin between January and June 2016.

  2. Initial full proposals due Thursday, April 30, 2015 with feedback returned by Wednesday, July 27. Final proposals by invitation only are due Wednesday, September 30, with awards announced in December.

Hidden Collections:

  1. Any format, relevant to any subject owned and held by your institution

  2. Where access through digitization is critical to make possible the creation of new knowledge and support scholarship.

Eligibility: Applicants and Collections/Tools

  1. administrator at recipient and partnering institution must sign intellectual property agreement with CLIR

  2. all metadata must be explicitly dedicated to the public domain

  3. collections may be in any format or relevant to any subject

  4. any standards, technologies, or tools may be applied that lead to creation of web-accessible metadata.

Limitations:

  1. program focuses on digitization and description, not collection assessment, conservation or preservation

  2. funded costs are those directly related to digitization and description, not infrastructure or indirect costs.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

Members in good financial standing are invited to participate. If interested, paste this link https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CYRG9X3 into your address bar and complete the 2-item survey. For your convenience, survey items are listed below.

  1. Provide a listing of the materials for digitization. Include estimated quantities, units of measurement and material types.

  2. Describe the impact of the proposed digitization upon scholarship, and explain why digitization is the most appropriate means to maximize the value and significance of the materials to scholars and students.

Based on your response to the survey, we'll make decisions regarding next steps. Contact me or Board member Tasha Lucas-Youmans youmanst@cookman.edumailto:youmanst@cookman.edu  if you have general questions. If possible, attend today's webinar http://clir.adobeconnect.com/hiddencollectionsq-a/ for specific information. Also, you may e-mail CLIR with your questions at hiddencollections@clir.orgmailto:hiddencollections@clir.org .

I'm confident that HBCU Library Alliance institutions hold unique and compelling hidden collections that support research, teaching and learning.

Your prompt response is appreciated!

Respectfully,

Sandra
