Students Honored at White House Healthy Campus Day
White House Recognizes Their Efforts to Encourage Students to Get Insured
Three Bowie State University graduate students were recognized at the White House last week during Healthy Campus Dayhttps://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2017/01/13/healthy-campuses-help-students-getcovered for raising awareness among students about signing up for health insurance.
Amina Ogundiran, Richard Onatunji and Maureen Elias joined student leaders from 60 campuses from across the country who were invited to Friday's White House event, recognizing their efforts to promote the health insurance marketplace. As leaders of the Graduate Student Association (GSA), the Bowie State students used social media, emails and fliers to encourage students to enroll during open enrollment.
The Obama Administration launched the 2016 Healthy Campus Challengehttps://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2016/09/27/white-house-healthy-campus-challenge to engage colleges and universities to increase nationwide health insurance enrollment. In all, nearly 100 colleges and universities were designated White House Healthy Campuses - students from those schools were selected by lottery to attend Healthy Campus Day. Bowie State was the only school from Maryland and one of five historically black colleges or universities represented at the event.
At Healthy Campus Day, the students heard from experts in panel discussions and participated in brainstorming sessions focused on best practices and creative ideas to promote health insurance enrollment. They even met First Lady Michelle Obama, who provided remarks at the event.
