Florida A&M News Feburary 21, 2012 Journalism Professor makes History as first African-American Woman elected Chair for Southern Scholarship Foundation Board Dhyana Ziegler, DCJ, professor of journalism at Florida A&M University (FAMU), made history as the first African-American woman to be elected chair of the board of directors of the Southern Scholarship Foundation (SSF) and the second African American to be elected to that position in 20 years. Southern Scholarship Foundation has provided scholarships to students for more than 50 years. Its mission is to help deserving young people who lack financial resources, but demonstrate excellent academic merit and good character, attend institutions of higher education. SSF is not just a scholarship; it is an education for life. There are 26 scholarship houses in the State of Florida on the campuses of Florida A&M University, Florida State University, University of Florida and Florida Gulf Coast. Ziegler has served as a member of the Board of Directors for 14 years and was a past-chair of the Student Affairs Committee. "I am delighted to learn that Dr. Ziegler has been named to this position," said FAMU's Dean for the School of Journalism and Graphic Communication James Hawkins. "This distinction serves as a signal of her commitment to her students and the mission of higher education." Ziegler is a four-time Governor's Appointee to the Florida Virtual School and is a member of the advisory board of Florida Tax Watch Center for Education, Productivity and Accountability CEPA. She was knighted in England as a Dame of Justice in 2008, named a Genius Laureate in 500 Greatest Geniuses of the 21st Century published by the American Biographical Institute in 2009, and has received several other honors and awards too numerous to mention. Ziegler joined FAMU in 1997 as the Garth Reaves Eminent Scholar in Journalism and has held several administrative positions including assistant vice president for instructional technology/academic affairs, acting vice president for research and director of university planning and analysis, and interim director for the Office of International Education and Development. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Delta Kappa Gamma and many other civic and professional organizations. SANDRA M.
